Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is a type oftreatment program where the individual will reside at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which usually demands a stay of 30 days or less. While in residential short-term treatment the individual undergoes an intensive but short duration of treatment that commonly incorporates a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual become rehabilitated and able to function without drugs in daily life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all scenarios of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential facility.

Residential Long-Term Treatment that is 30 days or longer

Attending a residential long-term treatment program (more than 30 days) is an effective way ofaddressing a serious drug or alcohol addiction problem. This type of drug treatment program is more comprehensive than others that only last a few weeks or those where the client is free to come and go as they please. Choosing a residential long-term rehab program (more than 30 days) means that you as the client will live at the rehab facility around the clock while you are in recovery. While providing a more relaxed home-like atmosphere the person has access to counselors and staff at all times. Long term drug or alcohol rehabilitation centers are an ideal choice for those who have a long history of addiction or who have had other unsuccessful attempts at recovery in the past.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must handle both issues in order to recover completely. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to relieve symptoms of mental health disorders, and some individuals take drugs which then, in turn, creates symptoms which mimic mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Addiction rehabilitation professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to properly treat real mental health conditions in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health problems off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and healthy.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug rehabilitation programs are a great alternative to other types of treatment programs i.e. private medical insurance and state funded programs. People who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire treatment process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug rehab program. In order to learn more about self payment programs, contact a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact a number of facilities so that you have a comparison of your choices regarding treatment options and payment methods.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is accessible to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid is dependent on income and other factors such as whether or not the individual has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug rehab, and there are a lot of drug treatment facilities throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug rehabilitation programs which are covered through Medicaid may only provide a limited treatment curriculum and may only supply such treatment on a short term basis, typically 30 days or less. Individuals who have Medicaid should explore which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to reap the full benefits of such a program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some people are covered through state financed insurance because they do not qualify for Medicaid. Some states however offer affordable health insurance to those individuals who cannot afford private health insurance plans. State financed health insurance programs will sometimes cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a wide variety of drug treatment facilities around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both inpatient or outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation services. To find out which rehab facilities will accept state financed insurance, speak with a drug and alcohol treatment professional.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When an individual is abusing drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective drug treatment facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term rehab facilities accept private health insurance, far more beneficial drug or alcohol rehab programs which require an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These programs which accept private health insurance can vary in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol rehab program. For more information, speak with with a treatment professional at a substance abuse treatment center in your area to see which programs your private health insurance will cover.
