  • Among Americans aged 12 or older in the nation, 39 million (16.3 percent) have used both a prescription psychotherapeutic drug for non-medical purposes as well as illicit drugs in their lifetime. Only 9 million (3.6 percent) report use of psychotherapeutic drugs without use of other non-medical illicit drugs.

  • Opiods have been reported to suppress activity in portions of the brain that control breathing; consequently, many individuals who experience a drug overdose from these types of drugs die because of a lack of oxygen reaching the body.
  • In several states deaths as a result of prescription drugs now exceed those from motor vehicle accidents, with opiate painkillers like Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin being the main culprits.
  • Eighties teen idol Corey Haim, who has reportedly battled drug addiction for years, died in March of 2010 of an accidental drug overdose. On the night of his death, he reportedly was having trouble breathing, but no one was aware that he had ingested drugs.

It is an unfortunate fact that many adolescents in the United States become introduced to drugs and alcohol at a very young age, and some even become addicted and dependent to drugs and/or alcohol. For adolescents who do become addicted and dependent to drugs and alcohol, parents need to be willing to do whatever it takes to get the problem resolved before it is too late. Any sign that drugs or alcohol are in the picture should be addressed immediately, otherwise, addiction will lead down a path of total destruction for the adolescent and for the family. There are drug and alcohol treatment programs for adolescents offered in every state, many of which cater only to adolescents and have treatment professionals and counselors on staff that are trained specifically in dealing with this age range.
