Methadone detoxification is a course of action which must be supervised by substance abuse professionals within a drug treatment facility who recognize how challenging and difficult methadone detoxification can be. Methadone detox is known to be far more serious in terms of symptoms and duration than even heroin detox, and individuals often revert back to methadone to alleviate withdrawal symptoms or, worse yet, turn to heroin or prescription opioids to relieve symptoms. This is why methadone detoxification must only be done under strict supervision at a drug rehabilitation program which has practical experience in dealing with this type of detoxification, and where the person can receive additional rehabilitation services to address all addiction issues.
