  • Recently in the state of California, drug overdose deaths have raised dramatically, according to many recent news reports. In one instance, a 19-year old Army recruit, who had just recently passed his military physical, took a handful and Xanax and went out drinking with several friends; this person did not ever get the opportunity to serve in the military, as he was subsequently found dead in his vehicle the next morning.
  • Fentanyl is sometimes sold as heroin, which has led to many overdoses.
  • Crack cocaine is a highly addictive and powerful stimulant that is derived from powdered cocaine, made by dissolving powdered cocaine in a mixture of water and ammonia or sodium bicarbonate until a solid substance forms which is then broken into the chunks (rocks).
  • Overdose deaths can be intentional or unintentional, and they can result from both licit and illicit drug abuse. Drugs commonly implicated in overdose deaths are alcohol, psychoactive medications, analgesics, illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin, and multiple drugs taken concomitantly.
  • Individuals who abuse OxyContin do so in an attempt to experience the euphoric effects, stop pain, and avoid withdrawal symptoms associated with OxyContin or heroin abstinence.
