Methadone detoxification is a process which should be supervised by substance abuse professionals within a drug treatment program who understand how challenging and difficult methadone detox can be. Methadone detoxification is known to be far more severe in terms of symptoms and duration than even heroin detox, and individuals typically revert back to methadone to alleviate withdrawal symptoms or, worse yet, turn to heroin or prescription opioids to ease symptoms. This is why methadone detoxification must only be done under strict supervision at a drug treatment facility which has practical experience in dealing with this type of detoxification, and where the individual can receive further recovery services to address all addiction issues.
