  • While a large percentage of people who have had a drug overdose have been reported to recover without experiencing any long term health effects, many of these cases have resulted in death.
  • Alcohol increases blood flow to the stomach and intestine, which increases secretions by these organs, including significant stomach acid secretion which can cause irritation and damage.
  • An observer of a drug overdose should attempt to maintain a state of calm, and try to get a response from the person by lightly pinching the back of their arm or by calling their name; additionally, if breathing or a pulse rate is not detectable, emergency resuscitation should begin immediately.
  • In 2008, there were 68 pharmacy thefts in Ohio conducted by individuals attempting to steal prescription drugs, a figure which doubled from the previous year.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more serious cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on the root psychological and emotional issues.
